Joyce meets her future husband, Bill Baker

Created by Heather 3 years ago
It was while Mother was stationed in Dover that she met her future husband, William John (Bill) Baker, a Flight Sergeant and radar engineer in the RAF. They met in the Sugar Loaf cafe.

After the War, Joyce and Bill had a radio business in a hut in an orchard in Chittlehampton, near Umberleigh in North Devon. Joyce used to deliver crystal radio battery sets on her bicycle. When transistors were invented and in common usage, the business was no longer viable. Bill got a job with the Press Office for the Marconi Company, so they became economic migrants to Chelmsford, in Essex, but always strove to return to Devon.

Their daughter, Heather, was born in 1958. Soon afterwards, the family moved from the centre of Chelmsford to a Marconi Company rented house in Great Baddow, where Bill worked in the laboratories at what was formerly a wartime Chain Home radar station.
